About Hyde Park: Safety & Security

Hyde Park is one of the safest communities in the city of Chicago—and it’s getting safer all the time. According to a recent report (PDF) by the South East Chicago Commission, an organization that tracks crime and promotes safety in the community, Hyde Park’s violent crime rate is significantly lower than that of the city as a whole. And another recent SECC report (PDF) found that violent crime in Hyde Park-South Kenwood dropped nearly 25 percent between 1995 and 2007.

The Hyde Park area has an edge when it comes to safety—extra police protection. We’re protected by the nearly 140 state-certified officers of the University of Chicago Police, in addition to Chicago's police force.

The force operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, from 39th to 64th Streets and Cottage Grove Avenue to Lake Shore Drive. Officers have full police powers. They respond to emergency calls, patrol neighborhoods, and more. They’ll even accompany you to your destination if you feel uncomfortable. More than 300 emergency phones in the area connect directly to the UCPD.

What’s more, the university publishes a variety of safety guides and tips, and maintains crime statistics for the neighborhood. You can even sign up to receive safety alerts to keep you informed.
